This course manua is based on HyperMesh 7.0, HyperView 7.0, and ABAQUS 6.4.HyperMesh is a high-performance finite e ement pre-processor for major finite e ementso vers, such as ABAQUS.
HyperView is a comp ete post-processing and visua ization environment for finitee ement ana ysis, mu ti-body system simu ation, video, and engineering data.
In a traditiona c assroom setting, this course manua wi he p you become proficient with various pane s and uti ities in HyperMesh that set up mode s for ana ysis with ABAQUS. It wi a so he p you continue to earn about post-processing and viewing ABAQUS resu ts in HyperView.
It is suggested that students have a fami iarity with HyperMesh and HyperView beforeattending this course. For students unfami iar with both software products, the suggested prerequisite HyperMesh and HyperView course is ode ing and Resu ts Visua ization
Introduction. For students fami iar with HyperMesh, but not with HyperView, the suggested prerequisite HyperView course is Resu ts Visua ization and Data Ana ysis Introduction.
In this chapter, using HyperMesh:
•ABAQUS FE input trans ator
•ABAQUS FE output temp ate
•ABAQUS macro menu
•ABAQUS user profi e
•On- ine he p for HyperMesh ABAQUS interface
The above items are the foundation for interfacing with ABAQUS in HyperMesh.
ABAQUS FE Input Trans ator
The ABAQUS FE input trans ator imports ABAQUS input fi es. It is named ABAQUS and it supports input fi es for ABAQUS versions 5.8 and above. Se ect this input trans ator and import an ABAQUS input fi e from the fi es pane , import subpane .
ABAQUS FE Output Temp ate
An ABAQUS FE output temp ate contains ABAQUS-specific formatting instructions that HyperMesh uses to create an ABAQUS input fi e. Severa temp ates exist:

Select an output temp ate from the fi es pane , temp ate subpane or the g oba pane .
Then begin setting up your mode for ana ysis with ABAQUS.
The abaqus58 temp ates shou d on y be used to update HyperMesh binary fi es containing an ABAQUS 5.8 mode . For this case, retrieve the HyperMesh fi e and then export it using the appropriate abaqus58 temp ate. Then import the exported fi e into HyperMesh and oad the appropriate abaqus 6.4 temp ate. The mode is now updated to ABAQUS 6.4 and you are ready to begin work on it.
ABAQUS Macro Menu
The ABAQUS macro menu contains six pages of toos specific to using ABAQUS with HyperMesh. The Abaqus page contains toos specific to interfacing with ABAQUS. The other five pages are the same pages in the defaut HyperMesh macro menu. The toos in the Abaqus page are described in the tabe beow.

ABAQUS User Profi e
Setting the user profi e to ABAQUS saves you time. Set it from the user prof pane in the Too page.
Setting the user profi e to ABAQUS a so performs the fo owing actions:
•Sets the FE input reader to ABAQUS
•Loads the abaqus standard.3d FE output temp ate
•Loads the ABAQUS macro menu
•Makes the graphica user interface ABAQUS focused; some pane names and pane options are renamed or removed.
Changing the ABAQUS user profi e to another profi e, such as OptiStruct, does not a ter the ABAQUS model.
On- line Help
HyperMesh on- ine he p has a reference guide for interfacing with ABAQUS. Access he p from the he p button in the permanent menu or press the ?h@ keyboard key.
On the Contents tab in the pop-up window, go to A tair HyperWorks → HyperMesh → Externa Interfacing → Interfacing with ABAQUS.
In this chapter, using HyperMesh:
•View images of keywords and data ines in HyperMesh as they appear in the ABAQUS input file
•Create and edit ABAQUS materia s and section properties
•Se ect ABAQUS entity types for HyperMesh e ement and oad configurations
•Create oads and boundary conditions for mode data
•Create an ABAQUS step
•Export mode to ABAQUS formatted input fi e
Chapter 2: Introduction to Defining ABAQUS Mode Data and History Data
Section 1: Defining Mode Data
HyperMesh Card Images
HyperMesh card images a ow you to view images of keywords and data ines for defined ABAQUS entities as interpreted by the oaded temp ate. The keywords and data ines wi appear in the ABAQUS input fi e as you see them in the card images.
Additiona y, for some card images, you can define and edit various parameters and data items for the corresponding ABAQUS keyword.
Use the card (Card Editor) pane in the permanent menu to review and edit card images. A so, for many entities, review and edit their card image from the pane in which they are created.
3ELEMENT with Section Property
The ABAQUS keyword
DELEMENT, TYPE = <type>, ELSET = <name>
is defined by ABAQUS e ements co ected in a HyperMesh component co ector. One DELEMENT keyword is written to the ABAQUS input fi e for each e ement type in the component. The name of the ELSET is the name of the component.
The ABAQUS sectiona property associated to the DELEMENT is defined by the component's card image. The materia that is associated to the property is defined by a HyperMesh materia co ector that is associated to the component. The diagram be ow shows how an DELEMENT and its associated property are organized in HyperMesh.

There are more than a dozen component card images for the ABAQUS temp ates such as SOLIDSECTION, SHELLSECTION, GASKETSECTION, BEAMSECTION, SPRING, JOINT and MASS.
Define an DELEMENT keyword with an associated sectiona property as fo ows:
1.Using the co ectors pane , create a component co ector with a card image and amateria co ector.
2.If necessary, edit the component's card image to define data ines and parameters for the sectiona property.
3.Organize e ements into the component.
ABAQUS Materia s
An ABAQUS DMATERIAL is a HyperMesh materia co ector with a card image. There are three card images for the HyperMesh ABAQUS temp ates:
ABAQUS_MATERIAL, GASKET_MATERIAL (for the Standard temp ates), and
CONNECTOR_BEHAVIOR. There are two methods to create a materia co ector and associate it to a component. Both methods use the co ectors pane .
Method One
Create a materia co ector with a card image and edit it to define materia data. Do this from the create subpane with co ector type set to mats. Then se ect this materia when you create a component. The materia is automatica y associated to the created component.
Method Two
Let HyperMesh automatica y create a materia co ector when you create a component. The materia 's name is the component's name. The materia is automatica y associated to the component. Then use the card image subpane to assign a card image to the materia and edit it to define materia data.
Updating a ComponentAs Materia
Update a component with a materia from the co ectors pane , update subpane .
Popu ating Materia s with Data
In HyperMesh, it is possib e to add as many data ines as you desire for a materia (such as DPLASTIC with yie d stress, p astic strain and temperature data). Manua y enter the data in HyperMesh or import an ABAQUS formatted input fi e on top of the mode in HyperMesh to create the data ines.
HyperMesh Entity Configurations and Types
HyperMesh e ement and oad entities have two identifiers: configuration and type. The entity configuration is a HyperMesh core feature whi e the entity type is defined by the temp ate. For examp e, some HyperMesh e ement configurations are rigid, spring, quad4, and hex8. Possib e types of the quad4 configuration in the Standard3D temp ate are S4, S4R, S4R5, M3D4, M3D4R, R3D4 and DS4. Simi ar y, some HyperMesh oad configurations are constraints, force, pressure, and temperature. Possib e types of the pressure configuration in a HyperMesh temp ates for ABAQUS are DLOAD, FILM, DFLUX and DECHARGE.
Most of the HyperMesh e ement and oad configurations have their own pane s. Use the e em types pane in the 1D, 2D and 3D pages and the oad types pane in the BCspage to se ect the desired ABAQUS entity type for different configurations of e ements and oads.
Kinematic Constraints in HyperMesh
With the exception of DEQUATION, ABAQUS kinematic constraints, such as DKINEMATIC COUPLING and DMPC (BEAM, TIE, LINK, PIN), are rigid (1D) e ements in HyperMesh. Create them using the rigids pane in the 1D page. Organize them into HyperMesh component co ectors. No sectiona property or materia is needed for these entities. Hence, either organize them into their own component without a component card image or organize them into a component containing different ABAQUS entities.
When Entities Do Not Need a Materia
Some ABAQUS entities that are not ABAQUS e ements are organized into HyperMesh component co ectors. An examp e entity is DKINEMATIC COUPLING. Such entities do not need a materia . When creating a component co ector for them, se ect an existing materia to avoid creating one that is not needed.
Unused materia s existing in the HyperMesh database wi not be written to the ABAQUS input fi e. An unused materia has no card image.
HyperMesh Step Manager for Initia Conditions
The Step Manager too is used to create, edit, review, re-order, and de ete ABAQUS initia conditions and steps. This too is accessib e from the Abaqus page in the HyperMesh ABAQUS macro menu. The fo owing image shows its main window.
